Abaj Takalik in Retalhuleu
The real name for this site is Takalik Abaj. Located in the costal low lands of Guatemala, in the department of Retalhuleu.  Even with the large distance of almost 200 kilometers, it has a strong relation with Kaminal Juyu, an important city near the plains of the capital city of Guatemala.

Takalik has 282 monuments of mayan and olmec style. They are emphasized with little bellies and a series of statues with animal characteristics. There is an astronomical observatory, and monuments of traditional ceramic that were shaped in the past.

Some altars are very stained, from the fire and smoke of rituals that were celebrated many years ago. There is one enormous statue that was found broken in pieces, and is now restored.

Surprisingly with their size and weight, each statue was originally formed from a single piece of rock, altered into a magnificent form. The statues include many interesting mixtures of "animal characteristics", usually including the crocodile and the snake.

The only site in its history

This site is considered one of great importancy, not only for its history of 2000 years, but for its profound mark in the transition of the olmec and mayan culture.

Many archaeological sites have evidence of cultural and social influence, but the difference seen in Takalik is the registered consistency in evolution with the forms of the structures, the same consistency needed to support a cultural transition in one place.
